Blood Tests for Cats

Monitoring the health of your pet is crucial, as they may not exhibit visible signs of illness.

A blood test or lab test allows us to learn information about your pet’s health, which can only be found from collecting a sample of blood and having it analyzed.

Why are blood tests important for my cat’s health?

The information that we have analyzed will help us learn more about your cat’s immune system. Lab work can detect and help identify complex problems with blood systems, and help identify, detect, diagnose, and even treat illness and disease in your pet.

How long does it take to get blood test results?

Once the blood is drawn at our hospital, we can run a large variety of bloodwork in our in-house lab. Most of these tests will take about 20-25 minutes until we have results. Some specialized tests may need to be sent to a reference lab (generally in Calgary) to have the testing completed. It may take 2-4 days to get results back to our office.

How should I prepare my cat for their blood tests?

Sometimes for certain tests, fasting may be required, your veterinarian will help you with preparation, if any, that may be required before the bloodwork will be performed.

How often should blood tests be done?

A blood test may be performed before surgical procedures. If medical concerns arise at any time throughout your cat’s life, your veterinarian will advise having blood tests done to help assist with diagnoses and treatment. When your cat reaches his golden years, your veterinarian may recommend blood tests more frequently to help stay on top of your ageing pets medical needs.

Does your hospital perform urinalysis and biopsy?

Our hospital can perform a urinalysis for your cat in our in-house lab. Sometimes the veterinarian may choose to send the sample to a reference lab depending on what they are checking for. Biopsies can be done in our hospital. The sample is then sent to a pathologist for testing and review.
