Dog Overweight

Overweight Dog Help

Unfortunately, obesity has become a common problem with dogs. Just like people, being overweight can be detrimental to your pet’s health. An overweight dog has added stress upon their body and is at an increased risk of diabetes, arthritis and joint pain. They may also experience exercise intolerance and less energy.

When is a dog considered to be overweight?

Regularly weighing your dog is important, but to determine if your dog is overweight, your veterinarian will want to score his body condition. It is a visual hand on assessment of your dog’s level of lean muscle and fat. Depending on your veterinarian’s body condition score of your dog, they will determine if your dog is at healthy body weight, overweight or possibly even underweight.

Are some breeds prone to obesity?

Some breeds of dogs seem to be prone to becoming overweight, such as; Pugs, Beagles, and Labs. However, any breed can become overweight. It is certainly not breed-specific.

Why should my dog have a weight loss consultation at the hospital?

Who better to help your dog lose weight than your veterinarian? They can properly score your dog’s weight and determine how much weight loss is required. They can recommend lower calorie or calorie restricted diets along with an exercise regime to help your dog reach its optimum weight.
